Natural dyeing is a fantastic eco-friendly way to experiment with yarn dyeing and learn about natural colors from our environment.

In this class, you will learn about the process of dyeing yarn with natural materials, using the sun as our heating element. No dyeing experience or knowledge of natural dyes required! We will go over an introduction to natural dyes, including what makes a good dye material, and how to prepare your fiber for natural dyeing. You will then be able to choose from the provided dye materials (or you can bring your own) to dye a full skein of yarn! All materials and equipment for dyeing will be provided for you to use in class and keep.

Since we are using the sun as our heat element, the yarn will need to sit in the sun for a few days. You will bring home your yarn to continue the process, and instructions will be provided for washing and proper after-care.

If you would like to bring your own dye materials to experiment with, here are some common kitchen scraps and flowers that can be brought in:

  • Onion skins (brown or red, and just the outside skins)
  • Avocado pits and/or skins
  • Pomegranate rinds
  • Carrot tops
  • Marigold flowers
  • Coreopsis flowers
  • Sulfur cosmo flowers

Additionally, if you want to make sure your clothes stay clean, consider bringing an apron to wear for dyeing (or wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty). We will have disposable gloves for use in class.
